I recently was given the amazing opportunity to explore Portland, Maine with some of my Aisle Society blogger friends, Brittny, Chelsea, and Jennifer. We spent 3 days exploring this amazing city and experiencing the best locations for weddings, rehearsal dinners, and bachelor/ bachelorette fun. I came away from this trip with a deep appreciation of lobster rolls (yum) and a love for the kind people of Maine. If you are looking for a friendly, coastal town to get married in then Portland is your spot. Full of world-class food, genuinely friendly people, and breathtaking ocean views – what’s not to love about that? Today I’ve compiled my favorite spots for your wedding weekend organized by activity.
Bachelor, Bachelorette Party and Wedding Weekend Activities
Maine Brew Bus – The bright green school bus known as the Maine Brew Bus takes private group tours around to experience the booming craft brewery scene in Portland. And tours are not just limited to beer; they also organize wine tours and the occasional birding tour. I can’t think of a better event for a bachelor or bachelorette party than hopping on this bus for some hops – see what I did there?
Easy Day – With a full bar and menu, Easy Day is one of the hippest bowling alley’s I have ever experienced. Scheduling a night of bowling for your friends and family is the perfect way to ease into the weekend and loosen everyone up. And do not leave here without ordering the lobster rolls – trust me!
Portland Discovery Tour – The best way to give your guests a tour of Portland is to book a Portland Discovery Tour. This trolley tour stops at all of the important landmarks within an hour. Our guide was not only knowledgeable but also super entertaining and fun. No visit to Maine is complete without seeing a lighthouse and this tour stops at the breathtaking Portland Head Light, which happens to be the most photographed lighthouse on the East Coast.
The Danforth Inn – With only 9 rooms The Danforth Inn is an elegant and quaint hotel that still has a sense of comfort and home. Each room has a unique design and décor. I was lucky enough to stay in Monument Square, which features a wood burning fireplace and a shower with a pebble floor. As Portland’s only luxury boutique inn, this would be the perfect place to have your family members stay the weekend of your wedding or to book for your honeymoon.
Tempo Dulu – If you want to treat your guests to a unique rehearsal dinner experience then you must book Tempo Dulu. Located within The Danforth Inn, Tempo Dulu offers Southeast Asian cuisine prepared with locally sourced ingredients. The restaurant is bright and chic while remaining cozy. Some of my favorite menu items included the Coconut Duck Shiitake Lime Mushroom Soup and Fried Lobster Spring Roll, all items that are sure to wow your guests no matter how big of a foodie they might be!
Union at The Press Hotel – Located within The Press Hotel, Union is a hip restaurant that is leading the farm to table movement in Portland. Featuring only the freshest sustainable Maine products, Union is at the forefront of Maine’s buzzing food scene. I also highly suggest booking the penthouse suite upstairs at The Press Hotel for your wedding weekend. This 1,100 square foot suite includes a private rooftop deck that could double as an elopement venue or an intimate rehearsal dinner spot.
The Black Point Inn – The ideal location for those looking for the quintessential seaside experience. Located on Prouts Neck, only a few minutes from Portland, The Black Point Inn will have you completely charmed from the minute you drive up and spot the clapboard walls. Surrounded by water and beaches on three sides it is the ideal setting for couples who are drawn to Maine’s magical rugged coastline.
The Black Point Inn is the perfect location for couples looking for a large wedding venue that can accommodate everything from ceremony to reception and guest accommodation. During our visit to The Black Point Inn I was blown away with their gracious and charming service. Not to mention I experienced the best scallop and lobster dinner of my life!
Inn By The Sea – Located in Cape Elizabeth, Inn By The Sea is a wonderful location for a large tented reception or an intimate elopement. The inn features traditional suites with gas burning fireplaces and beach suites overlooking the ocean, ideal for your wedding day getting ready photos. The Inn By The Sea excels in providing an intimate experience for their wedding guests. Unlike many wedding locations where you might spot another girl in white, the inn only books one wedding a weekend, so that they can truly give you the attention your wedding deserves.
What really amazed me about Inn By The Sea is their attention to detail. They take the time to get to know each guest and are above and beyond accommodating. The inn is pet friendly and your dog will be treated just as well as you – trust me I never saw a puppy lacking in treats!
New England Outdoor Center – Maine also offers venues for couples looking for something a little less coastal. Located on Lake Millinocket, the New England Outdoor Center is the ideal location if you are a lover of the outdoors. Surrounded by tall trees overlooking Mount Katahdin, this venue offers hiking, white water rafting, and moose tours. Invite your guests for a full wedding weekend of adventure and relaxation. Twin Pines Cabins features 16 luxury cabins that can accommodate all of your guests so that everyone can stay on site for a full weekend of fun!
