And check back next month when she shares how she popped the question to her bridesmaids!Hi y’all! My name is Jillian and I’m so excited and flattered to be able to share my wedding planning experience with all you Coastal Bride readers! Before I dive into wedding planning, here’s a little about me… I currently live in Los Angeles where I work as a Kindergarten teacher and I write the fashion, travel, and lifestyle blog Rhyme & Reason. On R&R, I share lots of outfit post, travel guides, wedding Wednesday posts, and fun lifestyle stories on everything from cocktail giveaways to tips for growing your Instagram. Lately, when my workday ends, a huge smile crosses my face because I’m working on the most exciting project: planning my wedding to Edwin in Charleston! I’m biased but I honestly think Edwin is the best man in the world! We met 6 and a half years ago through mutual friends at the University of Southern California. My best friend from growing up, Allison, went to USC and quickly started dating a boy. That boy happened to be (and still is) best friends with Edwin (who also went to USC). I went to the University of Colorado but I lived in Del Mar (San Diego) one summer with Allison because we got summer jobs down there. One night, we took the train up to USC for a party. I met Edwin that night through Allison and her boyfriend (they are still dating!) and the rest is history. We played all summer long on the beaches of San Diego, Newport, and Los Angeles until I headed back to Boulder in August. Edwin and I just couldn’t quit each other so before we knew it we started long distant dating. After I graduated from Boulder two years later, I moved to Los Angeles for grad school. We’ve both been in Los Angeles since where I work as a teacher and Edwin works in the film industry as a cinematographer. Yup, we’re still best friends with Allison and her boyfriend (Allison and I live together)! Allison is one of my bridesmaids and her boyfriend is one of Edwin’s groomsmen. It sounds so silly but we’re kind of like one big happy family. Six years after the summer Edwin and I met, we got engaged right outside of my apartment in Santa Monica. It was the Thursday night before Memorial Day weekend. After 6 years of dating, I of course knew it was coming at some point but I was absolutely surprised and caught off guard when Edwin proposed. I honestly didn’t even think Edwin had started saving for a ring yet that’s how surprised I was! After he got down on one knee and proposed outside, we went inside and popped a bottle of Veuve Clicquot and called all our family and friends. We were so touched by all the love and support we received. Edwin took me to a fancy Italian dinner at Giorgio Baldi in the Pacific Palisades where we sipped the yummiest Alsatian wine from Edwin’s parents and the bubbliest champagne from Allison and her boyfriend and enjoyed delicious pasta dishes. Allison and her boyfriend came and met us after our dinner for nightcaps at our favorite bar. The next day, I had a half-day of work and then Edwin and I drove down to Del Mar where we celebrated our engagement with our families all weekend long! Edwin knew I’d want our families involved so he planned his proposal for the day before a weekend when we’d be with our families as they had both already planned to go to San Diego for the holiday weekend. I forgot to mention that Edwin sneakily flew to see my Dad the week before he proposed to ask for his blessing. Edwin pulled off the most perfect low-key engagement. We’re both pretty relaxed people so I never wanted an extravagant proposal. Getting engaged at home and being surrounded by our family and friends for a 4-day weekend of celebrating was the most special engagement story I ever could have asked for! So, when’s the wedding and why is it in Charleston!? Well, we have a long engagement having gotten engaged last May and just now hitting the one-year out mark. We’re getting married in October 2017 in Charleston but I’m keeping the venue a secret online until our big day so stay tuned! I knew I wanted a Southern wedding as I grew up visiting all my family in the South. Charleston seemed like the perfect fit as my parents have a house their and thus we spend a ton of time in the Holy City. I’m so excited to plan my dream southern wedding with a focus on southern traditions, the southern landscape of our venue, and a packed dance floor. A few planning items that I’m particularly excited about are designing my invitations, picking my florals, and curating his and hers specialty cocktails. Keep checking in with Coastal Bride as I’ll be popping back over to update ya’ll on my wedding planning process!
